Overflowing pipes wreak havoc in office

Sector Clerk Patti Flores waded through 1-inch of standing ditch-water Monday that flooded parts of her office and drenched hundreds of pages of judicial documents.

The water came from overflowing pipes, not the rain on the roof, according to County Commissioner Bill Presson, who directs courthouse construction repairs and upkeep.

The water poured from ceiling tiles at the south end of the District Clerk's Company, which are situated under five air conditioning drains that feed into one, Presson said Monday.

When one exhaust clogs up with lime or moss, the condensation from the chiller occasionally swamps the other drains and creates overflow that can't be captured by the ebb pan, Presson said.

However, it's not a problem that needs fixing, Presson insisted Monday.

"If that had happened on Monday through Friday, we'd have been on top of it directly," he said. "There's nothing to fix except make sure that drain is always open," he said.
